Defining Proximity Marketing in Practice
Proximity marketing is the practice of sending targeted content or notifications to a smartphone based on its physical location relative to a specific point in a real-world space. Rather than broadcasting a generic message to a wide audience, the system triggers an action only when a device enters a defined zone or interacts directly with a physical marker.

In practice, this means installing hardware or physical triggers in a building—such as a retail floor, museum gallery, or conference hall—and using those triggers to deliver a relevant digital experience at the exact moment a visitor is standing near a product, exhibit, or entrance. The outcome might be a push notification, an automatic web page load, or an audio guide starting on the visitor's phone.
The critical distinction between proximity marketing and general digital marketing is the physical context. The message is tied to a precise spot on the floor plan, not to a user's browsing history or email address. If the physical trigger is absent or the device is out of range, the interaction simply does not happen.
Technologies Behind Proximity Marketing
Proximity marketing relies on a physical signal meeting a receiver. Three technologies handle the vast majority of these interactions in UK venues, each with distinct operational characteristics.
Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Beacons are small, battery-powered radios that broadcast a repeated signal containing an identifier. A smartphone running a compatible app or a supported browser detects this identifier and asks a server what content to display. Beacons work well for creating wide zones—such as an entire department or a corridor—where passive detection is needed without requiring the visitor to take a specific physical action.
Near Field Communication (NFC) requires the visitor to physically tap their phone against a tag. The tag draws power from the phone's electromagnetic field, meaning it requires no battery. NFC is highly precise because the interaction distance is limited to a few centimetres, making it suitable for exhibit labels, point-of-sale displays, or asset tags where deliberate engagement is expected.
QR Codes use the phone's camera to trigger a URL. Dynamic QR codes route the scan through a redirect server, allowing the destination URL to be changed after the code is printed. QR codes require no proprietary hardware on-site, but they demand a deliberate action from the visitor: opening the camera, framing the code, and tapping the notification.
The choice between these technologies is not about which is universally better, but which matches the physical constraints of the space, the expected visitor behaviour, and the required precision of the trigger.
When Proximity Marketing Is Useful
Proximity marketing delivers measurable value when a visitor's physical position directly changes the relevance of the information they need. If the same message applies regardless of where someone is standing, a simpler channel is usually more appropriate.
In retail environments, proximity triggers are effective at specific decision points. A notification offering guidance or a relevant promotion when a shopper enters a particular aisle, or a queue-detection prompt that appears only when dwell time near the tills exceeds a set threshold, provides context that a homepage banner cannot. The physical location confirms intent.
Museums and galleries use proximity triggers to remove friction from audio guides and exhibit interpretation. A visitor walking up to a sculpture can receive the corresponding audio track automatically via a beacon, or by tapping an NFC tag beside the plinth. This replaces the need to type exhibit numbers into a keypad or scroll through a long list on a mobile screen.
At events and venues, proximity marketing supports wayfinding and schedule management. Triggering a floor plan or session reminder as an attendee approaches a specific hall or stage reduces confusion during peak movement periods. The utility is tied directly to the visitor's immediate navigational need.
Across all these scenarios, the common factor is a clear, location-specific problem: the visitor needs information that is only relevant because of where they are standing right now.
Limitations of Proximity Marketing
Proximity marketing systems are constrained by physics, hardware maintenance, and privacy regulation. Understanding these limitations before deployment prevents projects from stalling during the pilot phase.
Signal interference and accuracy are persistent challenges. Bluetooth signals do not pass cleanly through walls, metal racking, or dense crowds. A beacon placed behind a metal display case may appear to be metres further away than it actually is. Promising exact indoor accuracy without an on-site radio survey is unrealistic; actual performance depends entirely on the specific materials, layout, and occupancy of the room.
Hardware maintenance is an operational burden that is frequently underestimated. Beacons run on batteries that deplete based on their advertising interval and transmit power. A deployment of several hundred beacons requires a documented inventory, a monitoring system to flag low batteries, and a physical schedule for replacements. QR codes require physical durability—if a printed code on a busy retail shelf is scratched, torn, or covered by a price ticket, it stops working. NFC tags can suffer from damaged antenna coils if the surface they are applied to is subjected to heavy wear.
App dependency and friction limit reach. BLE beacons generally require a dedicated app to be installed on the visitor's phone to listen for the signals in the background. If the venue cannot persuade a sufficient percentage of visitors to download the app, the beacons remain effectively invisible. QR and NFC bypass the app requirement by opening a browser, but they shift the burden to the visitor to notice the trigger and take physical action.
Privacy rules set important boundaries on proximity marketing. A radio broadcast is not automatically personal data, but records linked to an account, persistent identifier or individual journey can be. The appropriate lawful basis depends on the purpose and data flow, while direct marketing and device-access technologies may also engage PECR. Organisations should map the processing, minimise what they collect and verify the current ICO position rather than assuming that one consent statement covers every use.
Notification fatigue can destroy a programme from the user's side. If a visitor receives a push notification every time they cross an invisible threshold, they will disable permissions or delete the app. Effective proximity marketing requires strict rules on frequency caps, quiet hours, and ensuring every triggered message offers genuine, immediate value tied to the physical location.
